A New Coat of Paint

A New Coat of Paint

5/6/2026

It’s been a long time coming, but black0ut.org has finally shed its old skin. Today, we are officially moving away from our legacy WordPress setup to a completely custom, serverless architecture designed for speed, stability, and a much better listening experience.

Why the Change?

WordPress served us well for years, but as our library grew, the overhead of managing a monolithic CMS became a bottleneck. We’ve migrated to a modern stack powered by Next.js, Firestore, and Google Cloud Storage. This change isn't just under the hood—it allows us to deliver a faster, more responsive site that works seamlessly across all your devices.

What’s New?

1. The Persistent Audio Player

The biggest addition is our new global audio player. You can now start an album or a track and continue browsing the entire site without the music ever stopping. We’ve also added:

  • Seamless Transitions: Our new dual-audio strategy preloads the next track so there are no pauses between songs.

  • Waveform Visualization: See the energy of every track with dynamic waveform displays.

  • OS Integration: Play, pause, and skip directly from your operating system's media controls or lock screen.

2. Enhanced Discovery

Finding music is now instantaneous. We’ve implemented a zero-cost client-side search that lets you filter through artists, albums, and tracks in real-time. We’ve also overhauled our tagging system, allowing you to dive deep into specific genres or eras across the entire network.

3. High-Quality Downloads

We know many of you prefer to listen offline. Our download system now provides 256kbps M4A files with fully embedded metadata, credits, and high-resolution album artwork, ensuring your local library looks and sounds as good as the site does.

4. A Better Way to Connect

Our comment system has been completely rebuilt. You can now use Markdown to format your thoughts, and threaded replies make it easier to keep conversations organized.

5. Mobile-First Design

Whether you're on a phone or a tablet, the new black0ut.org is built to be touch-friendly. From the new mobile navigation menu to optimized font sizes that prevent "search zoom," every detail has been refined for the small screen.

Looking Ahead

This "new coat of paint" is just the beginning. By moving to our own custom CMS, we now have the freedom to build features specifically for our community without fighting against the limitations of generic plugins.

Take a look around, play some music, and let us know what you think in the comments!
